BA (Hons) Sociology and English Literature

The course is aimed at people who are interested in combining Sociology and English. Applicants need not have studied these subjects recently or even at all to be accepted on to the course.

Students will study a range of modules across the 2 areas. Individuals are allocated a personal tutor whom they can meet to review progress and help with any academic personal problems. Study Skills classes and tutorials are also available to assist learning.

In Year 1 examples of modules on offer include 'Introduction to English Literature' and 'Social Science and Society'; in other words, general modules which prepare you for more specialized modules in Years 2 and 3. Examples for Years 2 and 3 include, for English, 'Shakespeare and his Contemporaries' and 'Women's Writing' and for Sociology, 'Knowledge and Belief' and 'Social Research Methods'.

There are up to 12 hours of classes a week spread across part of 2 to 3 days per week. Depending on module combinations, this may occasionally stretch to part of 4 days. Where possible modules will not start before 9.45am or finish after 3.00pm.

The course can be studied full-time (3 years) or part-time (up to 6 years).

Entry Requirements:

Interview required

- All applicants must have GCSE English at grade C or above or equivalent
- 180 UCAS points consisting of at least 2 relevant A-Levels (1 at grade C or above) or an Access to HE diploma (with at least 3 units at merit or above)

Assessment:

Assessment varies from module to module, but usually involves an assignment written at home; sometimes, but not always, there is an exam as well. A few modules require students to do a short presentation.

Progression from this course:

A degree opens the door to a wide range of careers, too many to list them all. Some examples of areas that recent degree students have gone into include primary and secondary school teaching, college lecturing, social work and the caring professions, business and management, the police force and the probationary service. Some students have continued their studies to a postgraduate level.
