The AS/A Level programme involves a variety of fine art disciplines such as painting, drawing, printmaking and mixed media work. You are expected to use a variety of media and techniques, showing evidence of idea generation through to final realisation. It is important for you to understand and develop links with work from mainstream artists throughout your sketchbook work. Annual trips to art exhibitions are also part of the course.

You are expected to use a variety of media and techniques, showing evidence of idea generation through to final realisation. It is important for you to understand and develop links with work from mainstream artists throughout your sketchbook work. Annual trips to art exhibitions are also part of the course.

The course is delivered in a range of ways from painting and drawing classes through to practical printmaking workshop activities and includes some art history and gallery visits. A level students are always welcome to attend talks and workshops delivered by artists visiting the art department where relevant and also to interact with the two artists in residence. One to one tutorials and group critiques run throughout the course.

A-Level Structure:

AS level (year 1)
Unit 1 is a coursework portfolio exploring materials, techniques and processes and the development of ideas which may be issue based. Unit 2 is work on an externally set theme and a supervised 5 hour period of unaided work. Skills learned in unit 1 can be brought into play.

A2 level (year 2)
Unit 3 is the personal investigation which is supported by a 1000 - 3000 written element and unit 4 which is an externally set assignment which will involve a 15 hour supervised period of unaided work.

End Qualification:

Year 1: AS Level Fine Art.
Year 2: A2 Level Fine Art.

Entry Requirements:

Interview required

5 GCSEs at grade C or above including art, plus a satisfactory art portfolio.

Assessment:

Verbal and written assessment will take place throughout the course. Group critiques and individual tutorials will support students progress.

Progression from this course:

Edexcel foundation course at the college or elsewhere or higher education.

Course Costs:

All students on full-time courses will need to pay a materials/resources fee. Details will be provided before enrolment. If you are under 19 on 31st August in the year you begin your programme, you will not have to pay tuition or registration fees for your course. For students aged 19 or over, there will be a tuition fee (depends on the course) for each year of the course as well as a registration fee (which includes exam fees). However, many students will be eligible for reduced fees and / or financial support towards the costs. Click here for detailed information. Studio materials - art material costs will be discussed at interview.
Gallery visits - approx 2 per year, prices vary.
