Dance AS/A Level
The course is designed to give you theoretical and practical experience and an understanding of dance. You will acquire experience of choreography and performance to engage you in critical thinking about dance. You will gain knowledge and understanding of the dancer in action, and of the skills involved in performance.
You will develop dance appreciation skills through the analysis, interpretation and evaluation of dances and will gain an understanding of the historical and cultural context of dances. You will be expected to rehearse out of College hours. A commitment to this is essential.

Advanced Subsidiary
The Advanced Subsidiary is studied in the first year. The course is divided into separate units. These are: -
Unit 1 Understanding dance Unit 2 Choreography and performanceAdvanced Level
These units are visited during the second year of the course and the concepts covered in Year 1 are built upon in further detail.
Unit 3 Appreciation: content and context Unit 4 Group choreography and solo performanceEnrichment Dance
Dance Company - opportunity for students to perform and create original choreography and also try different styles of dance like street dance.
Methods of Assessment
Each unit will be assessed by one of two methods:
1. Written Examination. In Units 1 and 3 questions will be asked of the dancer as: a performer; the process and craft of choreography; the significance of dance; and a set dance works.
2. Practical Examination. In Modules 2 and 4 the students will be required to choreograph a solo or group piece and perform in a solo or a group piece.
Resources
We opened a Dance Studio in September 2008 that is purpose built with sprung floor, mirrors and air-conditioning.
Progression
The course is suitable for anyone wanting to pursue the arts or dance at Higher Education or any course requiring good communication and group work skills.
Entry Requirements
Students are required to have five GCSE passes or the equivalent from four subject areas including English. It is advisable that all students participate in dance outside College or have GCSE Dance or Performing Arts or Expressive Arts. Students will be required to attend a short audition to gain entry to the course.
Learning Support
Extra help and tuition is offered or all AS/A2 students, with any aspect of the course, practical or theoretical.
Charges
During the course a number of visits will be arranged which may require students to make a contribution towards travelling costs. Dance attire (shoes and dance wear) are required by all dance students.
