It provides a firm base for those wishing to follow a career in Fashion & Clothing through Higher Education or employment. The course has exciting opportunities to build a fashion portfolio, with learners frequently taking part in catwalk shows, fashion shoots and promotions (externally and internally based) that celebrate the practical work developed during the course. The course aims to develop learners in becoming equally strong in garment production, styling and promotion disciplines. The Extended Diploma will provide you with a range of experience to help support a potential career in the fashion industry or progression onto Higher Education at University or apprenticeships at fashion houses or retail departments.

What will I do on the course?

You will learn about the breadth of the fashion design industry and develop a range of skills and disciplines. You will get the opportunity to explore a range of fashion drawing and illustration, garment production, textiles, computer illustration and surface design, styling & promotion, catwalk shows and fashion shoots. Alongside this, you will also take part in our annual fashion shows and shoots, consisting of professional catwalk shows, both in house and external, working alongside industry professionals. The course is made up of a series of units delivered over two years, which includes the opportunity to work within the varied realms of the fashion industry.

Five Fixed Units:

  • Visual Recording in Art & Design (10 credits)
  • Materials, Techniques and Processes in Art & Design (10 credits)
  • Ideas and Concepts in Art & Design (10 credits)
  • Communication Through Art & Design (10 credits)
  • Contextual Influences in Art & Design (10 credits)

Thirteen Specialist Units:

  • Application, Exploration and Realisation in Art & Design (20 credits)
  • Design Methods in Art & Design (10 credits)
  • Computers in Art & Design (10 credits)
  • Collaborative working in Art & Design (10 credits)
  • Starting a Small Business (10 credits)
  • Surface Pattern (10 credits)
  • Printed Textiles (10 credits)
  • Pattern Construction for Fashion & Clothing (10 credits)
  • Garment Production (10 credits)
  • Accessory Production (10 credits)
  • Fashion Promotion (10 credits)
  • Fashion Styling (10 credits)

What qualifications do I need?

  • 4 GCSEs at Grades A-C including English or Maths OR 5 GCSEs at Grades A-C excluding English or Maths. Also including 1 art or design GCSE
  • BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design (Merit)
  • A portfolio of your work will be examined at interview as well as qualifications to assess suitability and skills level
  • A real desire to develop your creative skills and become part of creative culture
