Who is this course for?

This is a good course for you if you want to gain a more technical and in-depth knowledge of animal care. This course will also suit you if you have worked in the animal care industry for a number of years and wish to gain a recognised qualification.

A typical working week will comprise of a variety of classroom sessions and a number of practical classes where advanced animal management skills can be developed. What will I do on the course?

A typical working week will comprise of a variety of classroom sessions and a number of practical classes where advanced animal management skills can be developed. There will also be time to meet with your tutor and work on improving your Maths and English. You will learn a huge range of skills such as principles of nutrition, animal behaviour and communication, animal welfare and breed development, animal anatomy and physiology, managing animal feeding and accommodation and wildlife populations and ecology. In addition, you will learn skills that are required in any career choice, including health & safety, confidence building, social and practical skills, English and Maths. We also offer English and Maths GCSE resits.

What qualifications do I need?

  • 4 GCSEs at Grades A-C including English or Maths, OR
  • 5 GCSEs at Grades A-C excluding English or Maths, OR
  • Level 2 qualification in a related subject
  • Adequate standard of English and Maths
  • Mature learners with other qualifications and/or experience are also welcome
  • You should have a strong interest in working with animals and demonstrate a commitment to succeed.

Are there any additional costs?

Learners will be required to purchase items of personal protective equipment (steel toe capped boots, overalls and wet weather gear) for use on the course. Prices and details will be discussed at interview. Bursary funds may be available to help with additional costs.
