Industrial focus

Tutors are highly experienced in their sectors, offering in-depth knowledge of current business practice, including international organisations, start-up companies and professional bodies.

Course content

Core units

Operations Management: You will study a range of operational management theories, processes and practices that you will be able to apply to complex operational management decisions.

People in Organisations: This unit introduces the theories that have led to advances in the field of organisational behaviour. You will study examples that relate to theories and practices in exploiting and enhancing competitive advantage. The unit covers three areas of analysis – the individual, the group and the organisation – viewed from ‘micro’ and ‘macro’ perspectives, and their roots in behavioural and social sciences.

Financial Decision-Making: You will reflect on a range of theories, processes and practices that can be applied to complex financial management decisions.

Principles of Marketing: This unit develops your understanding of marketing principles that can be applied in a range of organisations. You will cover the nature of customers and markets, marketing mix decisions, and marketing planning and strategy.

Research Methods: You will develop the skills of inquiry and research required primarily for the dissertation but also, to some extent, for all of these units. The unit covers the major theories and concepts associated with empirical and library-based research, developing your ability to apply these concepts to practical research.

Dissertation: This is your opportunity to undertake research over an extended period and to develop a topic of personal interest.

Option units

You can select four option units (subject to availability and student demand). The list below reflects the range of subjects that are usually on offer. Your final choice will be made in consultation with your course leader.

Application and Issues of Language: This unit consists of two parts. One focuses on applications of language that are important for postgraduate students who are preparing for a career as a manager in a business environment. The other examines the role of language in the twenty-first century. You study one of the following:

  • academic and business English (for international students or native speakers)
  • advanced French, German, Italian or Spanish
  • a non-European language at beginners’ level.

Corporate Social Responsibility and the Ethical Company: This unit addresses the duties and liabilities of companies in respect of environmental law, employment law and human rights, and financial integrity. You will also consider upstream and downstream stakeholders and employees.

Cross-Cultural Management Issues: You will examine a range of relevant concepts, approaches, theories and practices that will deepen your knowledge of cross-cultural management issues.

Knowledge Theory and Management: You will learn how a variety of knowledge-based theories, approaches and practices from across the disciplines of economics, geography and management science can be applied to organisational management.

Management of Change: This unit covers change management theories and practices and their application to complex issues or organisational transformation.

Managing in the Legal Framework: You will study the impact of current national and international legal frameworks on the successful management of business ventures, appraising the influence that the law has on strategic and operational decisions.

Risk Management: This unit examines the structures and processes necessary for any organisation to achieve an effective risk management strategy. It covers the history of risk management and reviews current practices, also addressing the consequences of poor risk management.

Entrepreneurial Marketing Management: This unit covers entrepreneurship, innovation and the characteristics of entrepreneurial behaviour. You will gain an understanding of the factors thatlead to success in entrepreneurial business, including key marketing management techniques.

Strategy: The term ‘strategy’ covers the tools and techniques that enable an organisation to adapt effectively in a changing environment. You will use academic literature to evaluate strategic issues requiring problem identification, evaluation and proposed solutions. You will have an opportunity to apply academic study to work-based or case study problems.

Assessment

There are no examinations. Assessments range from written reports to individual and group presentations. The dissertation includes a report (15,000 words maximum) and a short viva session which can be conducted via Skype if you have returned home.

Projects/work experience

Reflecting the University’s focus on employability, units concentrate on live topics and current cases, emphasising the need to apply academic learning in the workplace. Students are encouraged to contribute issues and ideas from their previous experience and personal interests.

Why Solent is special

  • September and January intakes. Students starting in September will take 12 months to complete; those starting in January will take 16 months, with a four-month break between May and October.

Fees for the academic year 2013/14 are:
UK and EU students: £4,500 per year or £375 per unit of study
