Physics A-level
A-level Physics gives you a general understanding of the foundation topics of this discipline and involves problem solving, experimentation and interpreting data. Areas covered include particle physics, mechanics, materials and waves, as well as astrophysics. Your study will involve a combination of practical exercises and theory, and will be taught in a well-equipped laboratory by our experienced staff.

Vocational Science Route: If you wish to study more practical
applied science you can apply to study either the BTEC Level 2 or
Level 3 Applied Science Diplomas. Both of these courses incorporate
units of study covering Physics, Biology and Chemistry.
Your study will look at two aspects of Physics: particle
physics, and mechanics materials and waves, which develops further
topics learned at GCSE. Your study will include the following: Unit
1: Particles quantum phenomenon and electricity; Unit 2: Mechanics,
material and waves; Unit 3: Investigative and practical skills in
AS Physics; Unit 4: Field and further mechanics; Unit 5:
Astrophysics; Unit 6: Investigative and practical skills in A2
Physics.
There is no formal coursework assessment on this course but you
will undergo a number of timed practical and written
assessments.
Your Physics AS level can be a stand-alone qualification or lead on to A2 study. You will have the opportunity to participate in a physics competition and attend physics study and revision days. You will have your own specialist personal tutor who you will meet individually or as part of a group tutorial, and they will help you set, review and achieve your targets. There is an extensive programme of support to help you make higher education decisions and move on to university. The vast majority of A-level students progress successfully to higher education. There is an extensive programme of enrichment opportunities on offer and you will be encouraged to select from a range including volunteering, work experience, sport and performing.
Six GCSEs grade A*- C including a minimum grade B in maths and a minimum grade C in physics, or additional science and English Language. You must study AS Mathematics with this subject. A minimum of a D grade at AS allows you to progress on to your second year of study.
You could progress to higher level study such as a Science Engineering or Information Technology degree or seek employment in a scientific field.
