This course offers learners the opportunity to study a diverse range of music and music technology topics including performance, DJ technology, the music industry, computer-based music and media software skills, recording, and a final major project. Personal effectiveness and professional development units provide time for students to research the music and media industries and define the qualities, qualifications and skills required to find employment. Access to careers advice allows learners to look at all the opportunities open to them to study music performance or media at a higher level. Additional learning and pastoral support is offered through the tutorial system. As part of the course students are required to demonstrate specific literacy, numeracy and ICT skills alongside their main subject studies. These Functional Skills will help students with their coursework and also prepare them for further education life and work.

This course is taught through a range of approaches designed to provide learners with the opportunity to develop technical skills, practical applications and vocational real world experience. Opportunities for the planning and involvement with events and live projects are integral to the qualification. With our specialist computer music suites, rehearsal rooms, music performance space and recording studios, this BTEC Diploma offers students a chance to develop their skills for the professional workplace or advanced level courses. Delivery methods will include practical workshop sessions in our recording studios, computer music suites, rehearsal rooms and live performance spaces, classroom-based theory sessions supported by IT and computer-based research, real-world music industry situations (live performances, recording sessions, record company meetings etc), and self-directed study using resources on our online VLE (Virtual Learning Environment). There are no exams on this course. Assessment is via a series of assignment tasks to a brief that encompasses a range of academic and practical skills associated with music production and performance.

Students studying on this exciting programme will gain access to music industry standard specialist facilities, highly skilled and industry experienced teaching staff, excellent routes of progression within Reading College for further music courses and a full Music BTEC Level 2 Diploma, and Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths.

Four GCSEs grade D or above including English Language, or a BTEC Level 1 Diploma with a Merit profile (with Functional Skills Level 2). You will be interviewed and should bring along a portfolio of recent media-related work. A satisfactory reference is required. Applicants should also have some music experience either as performers or as DJs and/or producers.

You could progress to the Music or Music Technology BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary/Extended Diplomas.
