The Programme
The course is a vocational insight into the world of sport that combines theoretical research assignments with practical based assessment. Units address broad areas of sport including Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport; the Physiology of Fitness; Assessing Risk in Sport; Organising Sports Events; Fitness Testing in Sport and Exercise; Fitness Training and Programming; Exercise Health and Lifestyle; Sports Nutrition; Team Sports; Rules Regulations and Officiating; Sports Coaching; Sports Development; Sports Massage and Sport as a Business. An emphasis is placed on raising participation in sport at a local level. You learn by completing assignments that are based on realistic situations that may be encountered by a Sports Development Officer, Fitness Instructor, Sports Teacher or similar sport and leisure professional. You will be expected to take an active role in a range of sports events in the local community.
The Programme Content
Entry Requirements
Five GCSEs at grade C or above or a relevant Level 2 qualification with Merit profile where appropriate. Students must also have at least a grade D in GCSE English.
Costs
There will be the opportunity to buy college kit to be worn when representing the course. A course polo shirt is compulsory. There will be a charge for residentials and day excursions. Students will be expected to have trainers and a set of sports kit*.

Progression
The diplomas are valued by employers and universities. However, if you want to get a job straight away you could work in sports centres, leisure centres, outdoor activities centres and fitness centres.
Length of Study
One year to complete the Diploma and an additional year to complete the Extended Diploma.

This course starts in the 2013 / 2014 academic year.
