This course will further your Continuing Professional Development if you are already in higher education teaching in either a higher or further education context. It will provide intellectual stimulus and the atmosphere to refine strategies for teaching and learning and allow development as a reflective practitioner. The aims are to provide an opportunity to develop best practice in a supportive and collegial environment, through reflection, discussion and experimentation with new strategies for teaching and learning.
On successful completion of the course, the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education is awarded. The course is aligned to the UK Professional Standards Framework.
In addition to the time-tabled sessions, you are expected to continue your professional development by working with a mentor from your institution.

The course consists of two modules each worth 30 M level credit points.
Module one: Developing the Reflective Academic
Practitioner
This module aims to introduce you to teaching and learning in
higher education and help you develop not only the skills of a
lecturer, but also of an academic practitioner. This includes:
- An introduction to teaching and learning in Higher Education
- An introduction to key theoretical approaches in Higher Education pedagogy
- Pedagogic research
- Teaching and learning methods
- Self-reflection
- Development planning
- Internationalisation of the curriculum
- Assessment and feedback
Module two: Assessment and Programme Design and
Development
This module examines programme construction
and the alignment of assessment to programme aims allowing for
effective, fair and equitable methods of assessment. You will also
explore elearning and blended learning, new technologies and how
these can enhance collaborative learning and the learning
experience.
Assignments from each module are assessed. Course members are asked to be observed in their practice and to observe others and take part in peer review. This forms part of the assessment and also contributes to their personal development portfolio.
