The PGCE incorporates the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) and it is endorsed by the Institute for Learning (IfL) as a qualification required for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS).
Features
The programme comprises four modules delivered over two academic years. In addition, you will be required to accrue at least 120 hours of practical teaching in the learning and skills sector over the duration of the programme.
You must organise a mentor at your place of work. He/she must be a specialist in your subject area and be willing to provide you with guidance throughout the programme, as well as conduct two formal observations each academic year.
Length of programme and attendance
The programme is delivered over two years.
You will attend sessions at the Institute or partner college for three hours a week, and it is likely that you will need to undertake around five hours per week of private study to complete the coursework.
Entry requirements
You will:
- hold a recognised professional qualification at Level 3 or above
- be working in a full teaching role for at least two hours a week in the learning and skills sector
- have the support of your workplace, including their agreement to provide a mentor
- be intent on developing your teaching
- be passionate about both your subject specialism and inclusive learning
- communicate effectively in both written and spoken English
- demonstrate competence in numeracy and the use of I.T.
Assessment
You will be assessed through written professional development reports and regular observations of your practical teaching skills.
