This is a two day training course for delegates who require training in using a chainsaw in a tree from a rope and harness and includes sending the saw up the tree, working positions and cutting technique. Candidates must have successfully completed units in Chainsaw Maintenance, Felling and Processing Trees up to 380mm (formerly CS30 and CS31) as well as Tree Climbing and Rescue (formerly CS38) before commencing this course.

Assessment
This will be arranged by the NPTC Coordinator at a future date convenient to you.

Place of study
Training will take place at a felling site provided by one of the University's partner organisations. There are several such sites located across the East Midlands, all approximately one hour drive from the Brackenhurst campus. It is essential that candidates have their own transport available to travel to and from the felling site.

Course content:

  • Inspecting equipment
  • Protective clothing
  • Climbing trees with rope and harness
  • Using a chainsaw in a tree
  • Cutting techniques
  • Role and function of ground staff.

Equipment:

You will need to provide your own equipment and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) as shown below:

Chainsaw

  • Maximum recommended guidebar length 380mm (15”)
  • Must meet current health and safety regulations
  • Chain must be in good condition. Refer to ‘AFAG Guide 301’
  • Maintenance tools for the saw (i.e. Fuel / oil mix and chain oil)

Climbing equipment

  • Tree climbing harness - either full or sit type
  • Tree climbing rope - minimum 12mm diameter and of suitable length (recommended 40mtrs long)
  • four triple action karabiners
  • Adjustable lanyard
  • four prusik loops or split tails
  • A lanyard for attaching the saw to the harness
  • Any climbing or lifting equipment used during the NPTC assessment must be LOLER compliant - this means that it should be uniquely identifiable and have a record of thorough inspection presented with it

Personal protective equipment:

  • Chainsaw boots
  • Chainsaw trousers Type C (no damage to blocking material)
  • Chainsaw gloves
  • Combination helmet with four point chin strap and suitable eye and ear protection EN12492
  • Hand cleaner or wet wipes
  • Personal first aid kit suitable to take up a tree
  • Knife with a retractable blade
  • Whistle.
