What will I study?The course focuses on developing the knowledge and professional skills required to ensure that construction projects meet their objectives in terms of cost, quality and delivery - with added value in satisfying the design vision. Below is a list of the modules you'll study and the attached document explains each module in more detail.
Year One
- Introduction to Measurement and Cost (20 credits)
- Fundamentals of Construction Practice (20 credits)
- Numerical and Professional Skills (20 credits)
- Law and Health and Safety (20 credits)
- Architectural Science and Building Engineering Services (20 credits)
Year Two
- Construction Technology (20 credits)
- Engineering Surveying (20 credits)
- Sustainable Technology with Environmental Control (20 credits)
- Contract Administration: Control and Finance (20 credits)
- Construction Management Practice and Procedures (20 credits)
- Law and Contemporary Economics (20 credits)
Year Three: Optional work placement year
The third year work placement option is spent in working in
industry gaining relevant and valuable experience.
Final year
- Construction Procurement and International Studies (20 credits)

How will I learn?You will spend approximately ten hours per week in scheduled learning. This includes lectures, supported by smaller group sessions including:
- seminars
- tutorials
- laboratory sessions
- workshops.
You will also be involved in self-directed project work with the support of NOW, our virtual learning environment.
Outside of timetabled sessions you will need to undertake self-directed independent study. This will include:
- preparing for lectures
- researching
- completing coursework
- developing a portfolio
- directed reading to expand your knowledge.
Trips and study visits
Site visits and field
trips form an integral part of the learning process, allowing you
to put theory into practice. Recent trips have included visits to
the:
- new Wembley Stadium
- Eco build exhibition
- JCB headquarters.
These are all designed to help you understand and apply what you're learning in a real world context.
How will I be assessed?You will be assessed through a mix of coursework and exams. The coursework will make up the majority of your assessment and will consist of:
- group and individual projects
- reports
- presentations
- essays and a portfolio.

Is the course professionally accredited?Yes, the course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). This accreditation is a seal of approval that NTU reaches the highest standards of governance, quality assurance and resource management.
Graduating from an accredited course makes you eligible to join
the CIOB as an Incorporate member (ICIOB) and enrol on their
Professional Development Programme PDP to become a progress to
Chartered membership (MCIOB).
CIOB membership will enhance your employability and open up
opportunities to work on high profile projects across the
world.
You will benefit from our great links with industry which help ensure that everything you learn can be applied to the real world. This will be through: live projects supplied by real companies, guest lectures from industry, visits to working sites, industry sponsored awards.
Learn from expert staffOur Construction team is made up of experienced academics and staff who have recently joined from industry. These, together with regular visiting experts, provide a rounded, up-to-date education, informed by current practice and industry developments.

It's a flexible courseThe first year of this course is shared with BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying and BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying and Construction Commercial Management.
This enables you to develop a multi-disciplinary perspective and also the flexibility to switch to either of the other courses at the start of your second year (subject to your original entry qualifications) if you feel you'd be better suited to developing your career in the Quantity Surveying area.
You can also switch between study modes, full-time, sandwich or part-time, if your circumstances change.
International studentsThis course will set you on a path to CIOB membership. This is recognised and respected internationally as the mark of true construction professionalism, opening doors to a great career.
Where will I study?You will study on the City site. Most of your lectures will be taught in the recently renovated Newton building. You will also work in the Maudslay building for some of the practical session, such as concrete testing and soil labs. Find out more in the Facilities section.

The majority of your lectures and seminars will take place in the Newton building. This building has recently undergone a major renovation making it a great environment to study in.
Laboratory spacesYou will also benefit from dedicated laboratory spaces in the Maudslay building. These include a hydraulics and concrete testing lab.
Dedicated resource centreYou will have access to a resource centre dedicated to students in the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment. This centre, based in the Maudslay building, will enable you to study privately in a facility equipped with:
- computers
- large format plotters
- desk space
- the latest, and archived, journals and publications.
This study centre is open from 8 am until 8 pm.
IT resourcesOur IT resource rooms and PC clusters are distributed across the City site. Our PCs will give you access to:
- Microsoft Office
- web browsing
- networked file storage
- high-speed online printing services (with a free printing allowance for each student).
Resource rooms are available 24 hours a day.
Books and library resourcesIn our library you will have access to an extensive and diverse range of books and periodicals that focus on specialist areas within the Built Environment. The library's OneSearch system provides access to all our:
- electronic resources
- journals
- books.
We have a liaison librarian with specialist knowledge in Construction Management. They will be available in the library to give you detailed help in finding and using print and electronic resources. They can also help you with things such as Harvard referencing and research skills.
