You will also need to be able to work well as part of a team As a construction professional, you may work in one or more of the following areas: · Estimating costs for materials, labour, equipment and overheads for use in bids for tenders · Helping to plan which methods to use for each construction stage · Drafting construction plans and blueprints using computer aided design (cad) software · Monitoring building progress against agreed completion dates · Supervising teams of building contractors on site. · Land, building and quantity surveying · Town planning · Building regulations You would also attend regular progress update meetings with site managers and clients. To become a construction professional, you will need to have: · Excellent knowledge of construction methods and building materials · A clear understanding of health and safety issues, and building regulations · Good communication skills · The ability to work well as part of a team · A responsible attitude · It skills, such as knowledge of cad software · Problem-solving skills · Good organisational skills and the ability to meet deadlines Salary range: £14,500 - £35,000+ Average hours per week: 40
Additional NotesMaterials fees are levied for calibration, maintenance and replacement of surveying and scientific equipment.
Entry CriteriaYou will need to have completed a Level 2 qualification in a construction discipline or hold 5 GCSE grades A*- C including Maths, English and Science to qualify for entry onto the Level 3 Diploma. Mature Students can demonstrate extensive work experience or a portfolio of current work to obtain entry on this qualification
Progression DetailsYou will already be employed and may want to progress through HNC or to go directly into employment.
Case StudiesGloucestrershire College student Sophie Smith, from Hucclecote, is currently employed at Stroud District Council as a building control technician. 21 year old Sophie began her career in the industry aged 18; after completing A Levels she started work as an apprentice with Gloucester City Council before progressing into her current role. “As a building control technician I work on the planning and construction phases of a building and am involved in projects ranging in size from a small domestic extension to a large city centre development”.
