The Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools NVQ applies to anyone who provides direct support for teaching and learning in any type of school – primary (including foundation stage), secondary, special, or pupil referral units. This includes those with a general support role and those with specific responsibilities for a pupil, subject area or age group. Staff will have a range of job titles eg teaching or classroom assistant, learning support assistant, special needs assistant.
These qualifications are competence-based, linking a candidate’s ability to competently perform a range of tasks connected with their work. The NVQ programme is delivered in the workplace, and assessment is based on a candidate portfolio of evidence demonstrating competence against specific performance criteria.
Candidates receive individual guidance and support throughout their programme as they build their portfolio of evidence. In addition, they will be given opportunities to meet with other candidates to discuss possible ways of collecting evidence and to attend workshops.
To achieve a full Level 2 NVQ in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, a candidate must complete 5 mandatory units and an additional 2 optional units at level 2.
Full details of all units can be obtained on request. The qualifications are very flexible, enabling the individual to choose optional units which best suit their work situation and job role. Candidates will receive full support from their assessor in choosing units.
Career Progression:
Possible progression routes include HLTA and Foundation Degrees for Teaching Assistants.
