Since 2001 there has been growth in the 3D Animation and gaming industries in the UK and there is a significant job market for candidates who graduate with skills in these areas. This HNC award, should meet the needs of industry by preparing candidates for employment as character modellers, texture artists, character riggers, and lighting and camera experts.
The HNC award is based on practical exercises to build up knowledge, understanding and analysis skills for the working environment as well as research and evaluative skills. This means that learning is through actual practical exercises relevant to the work situation.

This course is a specialist Higher National Certificate, aimed at those wishing to pursue a career in the Creative Industries, within the area of Computer Animation, which incorporates skills development in the areas of computing, art and design.
Applicants should demonstrate enthusiasm and an awareness of the creative industry. This may be evidenced by the presentation of a portfolio at pre-entry interview stage.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Normally, one, or more of the following would be desirable:
- Minimum of two Higher Grades (SCQF level 6) at a minimum grade C or equivalent, possibly including English, Graphic Communication or Product Design.
- a National Qualification at SCQF level 5 or 6 in a related subject area, e.g. Computer Arts and Animation, Interactive Media or Digital Media
- Relevant work experience
Candidates may present examples of art, design, computer skills, film making skills, or other materials deemed appropriate if called to interview..
WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
This qualification is ideal for those students who wish to progress to University or employment in the 3D industry.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
This course is mainly assessed on a continuous basis and does not include an external end-of-course examination. Coursework takes the form of essays, reports, presentations, case studies and practical projects. All of the assessment work is undertaken by College staff.
PROGRESSION ROUTES / CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Achievement of the HNC or HND 3D Computer Animation may enhance job opportunities in the areas of pre-production and production stages of animation production. Candidates may gain employment as a:
- Concept Artist/Character Designer
- R&D Artist/Look Dev Artist/Pre-Vis Artist
- Storyboard Assistant
- Junior Animator/Modeller/Rigger/Shader/Texture Artist
- Compositor/Wire Remover
- Scanner/Recorder
- Production Assistant
- Editing Assistant
In addition, development of formal articulation agreements are underway with local universities in Aberdeen and Dundee.
