Whether you have ambitions of becoming a technical sports coach, strength and conditioning coach even if you are as yet unsure of the wide array of employment opportunities that there are in the sport and fitness industry, the HND in Coaching and Developing Sport will introduce you to the exciting and fascinating world of sports coaching.

The HND is a group award that is formed from a framework of SQA units, which are studied at SCQF level 7 (in first year) and 8 (studied in second year). In addition further optional national governing body coaching awards are offered to enhance each student's employability.

The course consists of a mixture of practical and theoretical subjects, with lots of opportunities to develop new skills in a wide variety of sports coaching and sports development subjects

For this reason you should be enthusiastic to engage in physical activity and be prepared to participate in many different activities including but not restricted to football, basketball, athletics volleyball and weight training.

You should also be prepared to lead groups of participants, from classmates to school children, through a range of sporting activities. Public speaking, working as part of a team and performing in front of others are essential skills in this sector and you must be prepared to get involved.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

This course is suitable for those leaving school with at least two relevant Higher qualifications at grade C or above. For those returning to education, life skills and experience in the workplace may allow entry subject to availability although evidence of an ability to cope with the academic level of the course would be required.

Please note: Students will be expected to purchase at least one item of college sports clothing. This clothing carries the college logo, is high quality and represents very good value for money. All students accessing Aberdeen Sports Village are expected to wear college kit at all times.

Also, students studying an HND will be expected to have access to a laptop for use in class.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

This course is aimed at developing the skills of people who are interested in working in the sport and fitness industry, specifically in the area of sports coaching and athlete development.

The course is comprised of a wide variety of subjects spanning the whole spectrum of sports coaching and sport development from exercise physiology, strength & conditioning and sports nutrition to event management and sports coaching theory.

Applicants should be extremely passionate about participating in sport and fitness activities and should be enthusiastic about the prospect of leading and instructing others in a practical coaching environment.

The course provides students with the opportunity to develop a wide range of sports coaching and instructing skills whilst at the same time developing their knowledge of the key underpinning scientific principles that support practical performance.

Students are also encouraged and provided with opportunities to build their confidence, improve their practical leadership skills and develop essential life skills including effective written and oral communication, the ability to solve problems and the ability work well with others.

Emphasis is also placed on developing academic research and literacy skills in preparation for employment or progression to university level study.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

This course involves a variety of assessment methods and is mainly assessed on a continuous basis and does not include an external end of course examination. Coursework takes the form of essays, practical performances, written evidence, presentations and group based projects.

PROGRESSION ROUTES / CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

On successful completion of the course students may progress to year 3 of the Robert Gordon University's BSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Science. Progression to RGU is subject to achieving specific grades in specified units and successful interview. Students are also able to progress to other universities or pursue employment.
