If you have an interest in significant events and personalities of the past, then you are more than likely to have an interest in Modern History. Units are assessed by a range of essay and source papers and there is a coursework unit in A2.

What’s involved?

Russia in Revolution 1881-1924 and Stalin’s Russia 1924-53

This unit deals with the transformation of Russia from the autocracy of the last Tsars to the Soviet Republic established by the Bolsheviks under Lenin and Stalin. It includes the revolutions of 1905 and 1917, the 5-Year Plans, the show trials and the impact of the Second World War.

The Changing Role of Women 1860-1930

You will examine the battle for rights for women in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The course includes a study of the aims and tactics of the suffragettes and suffragists before evaluating the progress women made towards equality across the period.

From Kaiser to Fuhrer: Germany 1900-45

Study German history in depth throughout the vital first half of the twentieth century and begin to evaluate the major historical controversies of the period. The key issues of the unit are the extent to which Germany was responsible for the outbreak of the First World War and how popular and efficient the Nazi regime was in the years 1933-45.

Ireland and the Union 1815-1922

The focus here is on the changing relationships of Ireland and Great Britain during the one hundred or so years between the Act of Union (which bound Ireland closer to British rule) and the Anglo-Irish Treaty (which granted most of that country a degree of independence). The causes of modern Irish nationalism will be studied as well as the careers of its most famous leaders like Daniel O’Connell and Charles Stewart Parnell. Also key are the events that sharpened the demand in Ireland for greater self-government including the Great Famine, the Land War and the Easter Rising. The module concludes with the foundation of the IRA by Michael Collins and the events of the War of Independence between 1919 and 1921 which culminated in the creation of the Irish Free State.
