Communication in any language is important but if you are considering a job working either in the UK or abroad within business, travel and tourism, hospitality, interpreting or teaching then having advanced language skills can be invaluable.

What’s involved?

The four language skills will be continuously practised and developed through the following topic areas:

Leisure and Lifestyles (AS)

Within this unit you will study tourism and travel; sports, hobbies and entertainment; customs, traditions, healthy living – health and nutrition, diet and exercise; unhealthy living – drugs, AIDS, smoking and alcohol.

The Individual and Society (AS)

This unit considers relationships and responsibilities, gender issues, youth culture, values, peer groups, fashions and trends, education, vocational training and future careers.

Environmental Issues (A2)

Within this unit you will study technology, pollution, global warming, transport, energy, nuclear energy, renewable energies, conservation, recycling and sustainability.

Social and Political Issues (A2)

This unit focuses on the role of the media, racism, immigration, social exclusion and integration, terrorism, the world of work, employment, commerce and globalization.

The Guided Studies Option (A2)

Choose one or two of the following options: the World of Cinema, the World of Literature and the regions of France.

In oral work, you will be encouraged to express opinions, discuss topics and current issues and use a wide range of vocabulary and sentence structures. The study of grammar will help develop accuracy and fluency in both speaking and writing.

Entry Requirements:

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C including:

  • English Language (grade B preferred)
  • French GCSE (grade A*- B preferred)

Which courses go well with this?

This course combines well with other foreign languages, English, film studies, travel and tourism, psychology and sciences.

Progression:

Single, joint or combined honours degrees at university. Languages combine particularly well with Law, Economics, Engineering, Science and Business Studies. Language students follow careers in many fields including Business, Finance, Marketing, Translation or Teaching.

Language qualifications could help you in gaining jobs in the EU and beyond. Career prospects in international companies are also very good.
