Have you studied French for a year or more either at Gloucestershire College or at another institution? Have you spent some time living and travelling in French-speaking countries? Over the course of the 3 terms, students will : · Study the vocabulary of everyday topics in greater depth than in Year 1 (Beginners or Fast Track), enabling them to communicate with confidence on a simple level with local people. · Learn how to give and ask for opinions · Continue to study authentic and real reading texts · Become more familiar with the basic rules of grammar, enabling them to create sentences independently in present, past and future tenses and to produce pieces of writing such as postcards, informal emails and short formal and informal letters · Through the study of the language, become more familiar with many aspects of life, traditions and customs By the end of the course Students will have studied a selection of the following topics to a greater depth than in Year One: - Family and personal details - Where I live / my home - Work and daily routine - Free time and hobbies / likes and dislikes - Out and about (in the cafe/restaurant, directions, shopping, booking a room in a hotel) - The weather - Holidays and going places / means of transport - Making plans - Health - Problems abroad Students will continue to familiarise themselves with grammatical structures such as : - Gender (masculine, feminine) - The present tense of regular and irregular verbs. - Question and negative forms - Agreement of adjectives - Adverbs of frequency - Perfect tense - Future Time - Modal verbs and the conditional

Additional Notes

- What will happen on the first evening? You do not need to bring anything more than pen, paper and folder to the first lesson. The teacher will let you know which text book is going to be used, so that you can purchase / order it before the next class. What materials or equipment need to be provided by the student? Any additional costs the student is likely to incur? - All students need to purchase the text book (Cost: £12.00 - £15.00) - Students need to keep a portfolio of their work, so ideally an A4 folder, paper and plastic wallets N.B. Please bring your College receipt to the first class together with your College ID.

Entry Criteria

Students should have studied French for at least a year - Beginners or Fast Track (60 hours of classroom tuition), be familiar with the language of everyday topics and basic grammar. They should be able to construct simple sentences using the present tense. If you are joining this course in January or April, please be aware that it is a continuing class. Please contact the languages department to assess whether this is the correct level for you on 01242 532139 or languages@gloscol.ac.uk Please note that all courses are subject to a minimum number of learners. We endeavour to run all classes on the first evening, but a minimum number of learners must have pre-enrolled. Please do enrol early to ensure that the class will run on the first evening. A decision to continue to run the class will be made based on the number of learners who attend in the first week.

Progression Details

Students will achieve a Gloucestershire College Certificate if they have: - Attended 80% of their classes (miss no more than 2 classes) - Completed a portfolio of work (including 4 appropriate ”assignments” ) - If students complete the Year 2/3 course successfully, provided that there is sufficient interest, they can move on to the next level, Year 3/4
