Is it for me?

This course suits those who have an interest in significant events and personalities of the past and who enjoy detective work and variety in lessons. Units are assessed by a range of essay, source papers and written examinations.

What’s involved?

The Wars of the Roses 1455-85 and the Reign of Henry VII 1485-1509

This unit deals with English History during the Baronial Wars of 1455-85 and the reign of the first Tudor monarch. The weakness of Henry VI and the problems this caused are studied as a prelude to the outbreak of civil war between the Houses of York and Lancaster in 1455. The successes and failures of Henry VII form the final part of the unit.

Henry VIII: Authority, Nation and Religion 1509-40

This unit deals with Henry VII’s successor as he sought to establish his reputation in England and internationally. It includes his relationship with his first great minister, Cardinal Wolsey, his desire for a ‘divorce’ from Katherine of Aragon and the momentous religious changes which resulted.

Revolution, Republic and Restoration: England 1629-67

Here you will study English History throughout the revolutionary period of the seventeenth century and evaluate the major historical controversies which resulted. Key issues include the factors which determined the taking of sides during the first Civil War of 1642-6 and those which contributed to the lack of success of the Protectorate of Cromwell in the 1650s.

The Golden Age of Spain 1479-1598

The focus here is on the emergence of Spain from an insignificant collection of states in the late fifteenth century to the first global superpower a hundred years later, starting with the reigns of Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon, the contribution of their grandson Charles V, and the glories of the reign of Philip II.

Entry Requirements:

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C with at least one of these in English Language. If taken at GCSE, a minimum grade C in History. If GCSE History has not been taken a discussion with relevant staff is needed prior to enrolment.

Which courses go well with this?

History combines easily with a wide range of other subjects including Sciences. Employers and universities appreciate the value of the subject. Early Modern History combines particularly well with Philosophy and Ethics.

Progression:

This course combines well with other A Level subjects to lead to Higher Education. Students studying History go on to a range of careers including Accountancy, Marketing, Retail Management, Nursing, Teaching, Personnel, Public Relations, Journalism and Law.
