This course prepares students to work as a music producer, artist, sound designer, live sound engineer or leads to a foundation for higher level academic study. Students are guided to develop practical application, relevant skills are underpinned with a solid theoretical knowledge and understanding, together with the entrepreneurial qualities essential to succeed in the music industry.

This course prepares students to work as a music producer, artist, sound designer, live sound engineer or leads to a foundation for higher level academic study. Students are guided to develop practical application, relevant skills are underpinned with a solid theoretical knowledge and understanding, together with the entrepreneurial qualities essential to succeed in the music industry.
Year 1

Students will experience a broad range of music technology platforms and a wide range of music production techniques, including multi-track recording, production skills, studio design, microphone and mixing techniques taught in professional recording facilities. Live sound production skills equip students to work in venues, festivals, with promoters and events management companies, an expanding area of the music industry.
Creative music arrangement, remix and production skills are developed using numerous software platforms. Students apply music technology innovatively in performance settings using the latest cutting edge hands-on audio technology and visual VJ techniques. Sound design techniques, synthesis, sampling, audio manipulation techniques and the creative use of effects are explored.

Year 2

Students are encouraged to consolidate their interests and experiences and focus on more substantial pieces of work. Produce an EP of original recordings and/or electronic compositions to a contemporary standard. Create a portfolio of multi-media based audio work - including film, game, TV ad, recording foley, and work in 5.1 surround sound.

Successfully realise a creative final major project based around music technology performance incorporating the latest kit and live synced VJ techniques, to sonic art installations, to multi-media environments.

Students will need between 120 and 240 UCAS points from:

  • At least two 'A' Levels at 'A2', with one in a related subject are
  • BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma in a related subject area
  • Advanced Diploma with relevant Principal or Additional and Specialist Learning (ASL)
  • International Baccalaureate

Experienced mature students with 3 years' recent and relevant professional experience or other relevant qualifications are welcome to apply.
