Qualification Summary

The Diploma in Tourism Management is designed to provide candidates with a broad perspective and understanding of the operational aspects of the international tourism industry. The qualification enables candidates to gather a detailed knowledge of the history and understanding of the different aspects of the tourism industry including a geographical knowledge of key tourist regions and destinations of special interest, The qualification prepares candidates for supervisory and management roles within the tourism .

The qualifications also enables candidates to develop wider transferrable skills need at supervisory and management levels such as computing, I.T. marketing, finance, leadership, team building and an understanding of health and safety issues.


Entry Requirements

Registration is limited to students of minimum 18 years of age

  • Minimum GCSE or equivalent
  • Some work experience in the field of hospitality and tourism is advantageous.

English Language Requirements

IELTS 5.0 or equivalent. Students who have an IELTS score 4.5 are required to attend an extra 3 hours of English language tutorials per week for one semester along with the main course of study.


Qualification Structure

This qualification consists of ten mandatory units. Candidates must achieve a pass in each unit to be awarded the qualification.

  • Business Operations in Hospitality and Tourism
  • Destination Analysis
  • Finance for Hospitality and Tourism
  • Marketing in Hospitality and Tourism
  • Special Interest Tourism
  • Travel Agency and Tour Guiding Operations
  • Tourism Economics
  • Travel Geography
  • The Tourism Industry

Duration

12 months Full time


Qualification Level

NQF Level 4


Progression

Candidates who successfully achieve the Diploma in Tourism Management can progress onto the Advanced Diploma in Tourism Management or the Advanced Diploma in Hotel Management. The Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality also now provides a Post Graduate Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management.

This qualification is also recognised by universities for entrance onto the second year of hospitality and tourism degree programmes at one of the following universities:

  • Bournemouth University - final year of Hospitality and Tourism Degree
  • Thames Valley University - second year of BA (Hons) in Hospitality and Tourism Studies
  • Middlesex University (Dubai) - second year BA (Hons.) Major in International Tourism Management
  • Birmingham University - second or final year BA (Hons) International Hospitality and Tourism Business Development
  • University of Sunderland - final year BSc (Hons) International Tourism and Hospitality Management
  • London South Bank University - second or final year of BA (Hons) Tourism and Hospitality
