The Professional Dog Grooming
course will make it possible for you to achieve your
dream of becoming a commercial dog groomer. Your training
will take place in a modern, fully-equipped salon which complies to
current Health & Safety and legal standards. Training in
a commercial salon will also give you a very good insight into the
real world of dog grooming – something colleges can’t offer.

assured that your grooming environment is of the highest
standards.
The Training Schedule section below shows you just what a
fascinating and absorbing course this is. It provides you with an
in-depth study of the grooming process, the techniques required and
their application to the huge variety of coats you are likely to
encounter across the hundreds of dog breeds. From the short wiry
coat of the Yorkshire Terrier to the long luxurious pelt of the
Afghan Hound; all require different techniques, different tools and
an understanding of various temperaments of the different
breeds.
The Professional Dog Grooming course maps a number of units of the
City and Guilds qualification and is a natural progression route
for learners who wish to proceed down this path. Further
information will be available at the end of training.
Previous Knowledge Required
You do not need any prior learning knowledge or experience to take this course. This course is openly available to anyone who wishes to take part in a highly rewarding home study course, although you would be expected to have a reasonable standard of literacy and a respect of animal welfare.
What is included in the course?
- 10 day theory and practical based training (see below)
- Starter Kit - contents : Mains operated variable speed clipper which includes a no. 10 clipper blade, 3f, 4f, 5f, 7f and no. 15 metal clipper blades, set of metal attachment combs, steel comb, small and large slicker brush, heavy duty nail clippers, one pair each small, 8 inch and blending scissors (please note items may vary subject to change and only reputable commercial equipment of a high standard is used). If you require left handed scissors, there will be an additional charge of £100; this is due to the increased costs in manufacture.
- 4 Academy instructional grooming DVDs (The West Highland White Terrier, The Shih Tzu in a puppy trim, The Cockapoo and The English Cocker Spaniel.

Yes you really will be ready to start this exciting new career.
Support
All training and practical tasks will be carried out at all times under the close supervision of a qualified Tutor. Your Tutor is there to support you and assist you through this course.
Assessment
Assessment of each learner will be carried out during each day
and at the end of the course. Written feedback and a grade of
either pass, merit or distinction will be awarded. The grade
achieved will be written onto the completion certificate.
This will be sent out after training is completed and all written
tasks completed and handed in.
All activities will have accompanying written text given to the
learner. A homework task will be set at the end of every day
and must be handed in the next training day.
The grooming DVDs are a very important learning aid. We
expect all students to watch them at least twice during their
training course.
All students must photograph their practical work before and after the task and the day’s activities written up. This forms a useful portfolio for their future use and also acts as evidence of their training. This is especially important should they wish to undertake City and Guilds qualifications.
