Course Aim & Objective:

  • Analyse in depth all the aspects of the Italian language
  • Develop your competence in dealing with everyday situations, conversing about past experience  and discussing on social issues
  • Stimulate your interest in the wider aspects of the Italian culture and society
  • Enable you to converse confidently with a native speaker about past events, current affairs and a wide range of topics related to everyday life and society in general
  • Enlarge your ability to structure your writing in an articulate way, using complex grammar structures and selecting the proper vocabulary
  • Develop your competence in sustaining/contradicting opinions, organizing deductively your speech and referring to facts

You will be able to:

  • Compare people, places and things
  • Express commands and polite request
  • Express opinions and doubts
  • Describe the distant past
  • Report what others have said
  • Make negative statement/contradict
  • Talk about hypothetical situations
  • Use the passive form

Assessment: 

Observation, role-plays, Q&A, Questionnaires, discussion, student presentation and tests for the four skills.  Exams are usually held in May and June.  Unit 1 (6561) Listening and writing (carries 30% of the total marks); Unit 2 (6562) Reading and writing (carries 30% of the total marks); Unit 3 (6563) Oral presentation on a topic chosen and prepared by the learner from the "General Topic Areas" (carries 40% of the total marks and lasts ten to twelve minutes).

Homework is set every week and learners need at least two hours of home study a week.  You are advised to do your written homework as practice for your exams and to give the tutor the opportunity to identify your weaknesses and provide additional material to rectify them.

  • Units concern Current Affairs and Culture of Italy.  You will be able to:
  • Compare people, places and things

  • Talk about hypothetical situations
  • Use the passive form

Opportunities to read authentic material extracted from Italian magazines and newspapers and to listen to recorded news and debates from the RAI, in addition to the text book and accompanying CD.  Twenty minutes session every week to discuss the topic agreed together the week before.  Tenses: Present, Present Perfect, Future, Imperfect, Subjunctive, Conditional and Past Historic of regular/irregular/reflexive and modal verbs.  Pronouns: Subject, Reflexive, Direct, Indirect, Combined and Disjunctive.  Prepositions and Combined Prepositions.
