Description

Floristry is a creative, innovative and stimulating career. This course will give you the opportunity to gain an industry recognised qualification, and is suitable for both the school leaver and the mature student. The diploma offers an excellent starting point for those who are seeking a career in floristry.

Covering basic floristry skills, focusing on how to use colour, texture and balance within commercial designs, funeral and wedding work, along with work experience in a retail florist. Students also benefit from industry speakers and demonstrations, along with opportunities to attend educational trips to Chelsea Flower Show, Covent Garden and the flower auctions in Holland.

Course Content

  • Assembling floristry designs
  • Floristry designs in a medium
  • Industry experience
  • Plant identification, care and use
  • Business
  • Conditioning and care of cut flowers

Trips may include:

  • Holland's Alsmeer Flower Auction,
  • Chelsea Flower Show,
  • Wholesaler visits
  • Covent Garden.

2 days per week plus at least 200 hours work experience throughout the academic year, covering Mother's Day, Valentine's Day and Christmas with a local floristry business. Lectures, practical instruction and demonstrations.

College Days - Tuesday and Thursdays and Fridays.

Entry Requirements

Basic education but previous floristry experience not required. A flair for colour and an interest in flowers and plants is an advantage.

Prospects/Employment

Employment with florist shops, hotels, garden centres and freelance designers. The course can also be used as a progression to further study on the part-time Level 3 qualification covering advanced techniques in wedding and funeral design with opportunities to work on large event work, gain further knowledge on display trends, techniques and perfecting workmanship for the commercial industry.
