MSc Investment and Financial Management (new for 2013)

The MSc Investment and Financial Management will prepare you to launch a successful career in the global corporate and financial sector as an analyst, consultant, treasurer, trader or investment manager. This course has three unique characteristics:

First, it requires no prior knowledge of business or finance and begins by building a solid understanding of basic business concepts, functions, roles and decisions. This enables you to combine and leverage your previous studies in a different subject area to achieve a deeper understanding of finance and a valuable competitive advantage.

Second, the course develops in an academically rigorous manner the general and specialist knowledge, skills and competencies required today by employers internationally. Learning in applied subject areas is lab and coursework-based using on software, tools and data (eg., Microsoft Excel and add-ons, trading simulations, Thomson Reuters Eco Win, Fame, etc) that are routinely used by major corporations and financial institutions. The specialist components of the modules and teaching material are in line with the syllabus of professional bodies such as the Chartered Financial Analysts Institute (CFA) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Third, the course allows you to gain an additional competitive edge from the distinctive expertise of NBS faculty. You will be taught by leading academics and professionals that are at the forefront of research, practice and policy in traditional and new areas which include International Corporate Governance, Financial Modelling and Quantitative Finance and Sustainable Finance and Responsible Investment.

Indicative faculty achievements include authorship of authoritative textbooks which are taught at the best universities worldwide, publication of several influential academic papers, participation in leading policy for a and leadership of major corporations and consulting projects.

Aims and Highlights of the course:

The aim of the course is for you to understand how to make the best possible decisions within the increasingly complex and complicated global financial markets. You will be introduced to the latest theories, evidence, systems, procedures and best practices which are related to financial and investment management. The focus will be international and will not be limited only to developed countries or large financial institutions and corporations.

Graduates of the programme have very broad and exciting career prospects across a wide variety of jobs and organisations internationally.

In the financial sector they can work as employees or independent professionals for institutions such as investment and commercial banks, insurance companies, hedge, mutual and pension funds, brokers, rating agencies, venture capitalists and regulatory bodies. Relevant job titles include traders, financial analysts and personal financial advisors, financial managers, loan counsellors and officers, securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents and risk managers. In corporations, graduates are well prepared for working in the financial department as financial managers, analysts, treasurers, capital budget analysts, credit managers and investor relations specialists. Consulting firms are also major employers of graduates with finance and investment expertise and use them as data analysts, advisors or system developers. In the information and technology sector graduates of the program can be employed by firms developing specialised financial software, data, news and analytics.

We welcome applications from students whose first language is not English or those whose degree was not taught in English. To ensure such students benefit fully from postgraduate study, we require evidence of proficiency in English. We also will require a certain standard to be achieved on the written element of the test. Our usual entry requirements are as follows:

  • IELTS: 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in all components)
  • TOEFL: Internet-based score of 92 overall (minimum 21 in the listening and writing components; 22 in the reading component; and 23 in the speaking component)
  • PTE: 62 overall (minimum 55 in all components)

In certain circumstances we may require you to complete a Pre-Sessional English for Academic Purposes course prior to beginning your programme. This course may be taken at our INTO Language Learning Centre.

Management Skills and Personal Development semester 1 to 3

Fees for the academic year 2013/2014 will be

  • UK/EU Students: £9,000
  • International Students: £14,350

International applicants from outside the EU may need to pay a deposit.

Living Expenses:

Approximately £7,500 living expenses will be needed to adequately support yourself.

Scholarships and Funding:

Scholarships of £1,000 are available for all UEA alumni.

Scholarships may be offered to UK/EU and International students. Scholarships are normally awarded to students on the basis of academic merit and are usually for the duration of the period of study.

Funding for postgraduate study is also available both from the university and from a number of external schemes.
