Our Primary PGCE has three routes:

two full-time routes, which run from September to July, and a part-time route, which runs from September over two academic years. all students are prepared in line with the requirements of the teachers' Standards (2012) for the award of QTS.

We work in partnership with around 350 primary schools to enable Primary PGCE students to meet the Standards and fully prepare to be a primary teacher. Our students benefit enormously from the complementary skills and expertise of staff in partnership schools and at the IOE.

the schools offer placements for teaching experience, and their teachers serve as tutors, mentors and joint assessors for our student teachers. IOE tutors have extensive experience of teaching, school management, inspection, research and consultancy.

In 2011–12, 250 students enrolled on this programme. We encourage a wide range of students to study for the Primary PGCE, and have a good record of attracting traditionally under-represented groups.

Primary PGCE students can gain experience of teaching across the key stages, as follows:

  • the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1
  • Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2
  • lower Key Stage 2 (ages 7 to 9) and upper Key Stage 2 (ages 9 to 11). an essential part of all routes is practical experience in several different schools or settings.

Places on the Primary PGCE are in high demand, and you should apply as soon as possible after 1 September in the year before you want to start your programme (for example, in September 2012 for a September 2013 start).

Following its most recent Ofsted inspection, our Primary PGCE was given a grade 2 (good with outstanding features).

Features

Our Primary PGCE develops effective, confident teachers whose classroom practice is informed by an advanced knowledge of educational theory, and who will continue to learn and reflect throughout their careers. We will:

  • help you to acquire the skills and expertise to support children's learning
  • prepare you to teach in an inclusive urban environment
  • provide professional development in all national curriculum subjects
  • ensure that you show a concern for professional values and demonstrate the positive attitudes and behaviour you expect from pupils.

Attendance

Full-time route: the full-time routes involve a programme of lectures, workshops, tutorials and self-study. You will be supported through a virtual learning environment and will participate in school placements.

Part-time route: the part-time Primary PGCE is for people in part-time work, or with family responsibilities or other commitments. the curriculum is the same for part-time students as for full-time students on the Primary PGCE.

There are lectures and workshops at the IOE, serial placements (where you will need to be in school for a certain number of days over a period of time) and two full-time block school experiences of up to four and eight weeks when you will need to be available every day in school. any days spent in school will be full days, usually from at least 8.00am to 5.00pm.

Your commitment

the part-time Primary PGCE offers a degree of flexibility, but it requires self-discipline and autonomy, and cannot be undertaken successfully without a commitment to home study and/or school-based work each week. You are best suited to this route if you have flexible working and/or childcare arrangements; it will not be possible for you to complete the programme as a part-time student teacher in full-time employment.

Entry requirements

Please read all the entry requirements carefully before submitting your application to the GTTR. We will not consider incomplete applications; if you do not address all the entry requirements in your application, it will be sent to your next choice of institution.

Academic qualifications

Degree

We give preference to people with a first degree at second class or above.

'A' level

You must have three 'A' levels at grade C or above (or the equivalent), and we expect you to have studied a broad range of national curriculum subjects or other directly related areas as part of your wider experience. If you hold other level 3 qualifications (e.g. Access or BTEC), you will need to send a copy of your certificate or transcript to Recruitment and Admissions as soon as you have completed your application.

GCSE

You must have a GCSE pass at grade A* to C in English language, mathematics and a science subject by the time you start the PGCE.

In addition, if you apply for the PGCE (Specialist Mathematics route) then you will require an 'A' level Mathematics at Grade C or above.

Overseas qualifications

If you were educated outside the UK, we will accept qualifications of an equivalent level to those listed above. You will need to send a copy of your certificate(s) or transcript to Recruitment and Admissions as soon as you have completed your application. Please note that we do not accept English language qualifications gained in a non-English speaking country as an English language GCSE equivalent. For more information on equivalent qualifications, please visit the NARIC website: naric.org.uk

School experience

You must undertake a minimum of 10 days' experience in a mainstream, urban state-maintained primary school in the UK. You must complete this before your interview, and within the 18 months prior to your application. this must include five days' general experience to see the whole school's programme and age range, and five days following one class. You must include in your GTTR application the dates and the name and address of the school in which your experience takes place, and you will need to bring evidence of completion of the school experience to your interview. If you work as a teaching assistant, learning assistant or mentor, this will be taken into account, but it is still an essential requirement that you fulfil the school experience as detailed above.

Academic reference

It is important that your principal referee is able to provide a very supportive and informative reference. this person should normally be your personal tutor from college or university. If you graduated from college or university before 2007, then you may wish to use a professional referee. this can, for example, be your headteacher or head of department if you have been working in a school.

Primary French and Primary Spanish Specialism

If you intend to choose French or Spanish for specialist study, we expect you to be fluent in the language you are choosing. You should have – as part of the academic requirements above – an 'A' level at grade C or above, or a higher qualification, in your specialist study language. This requirement does not apply if you are a native speaker of that language.

The interview procedure includes assessment of both oral and written work in the chosen language.

Interview

We will invite shortlisted applicants to an interview. At your interview, you will give a short presentation, which will draw on your ten-day school experience. You will need to demonstrate an awareness of the role of a teacher, as well as some knowledge of current issues in primary education. You will be required to pass a test in English and one in Mathematics. Candidates for the PGCE Specialist Mathematics route will take an enhanced Mathematics test.

Modules

The Primary PGCE comprises three modules, all of which you must pass to be awarded a PGCE.

  • Developing learning and teaching in the primary curriculum: This module, which carries 30 credits at masters level, focuses on aspects of teaching and learning within the curriculum, with particular emphasis on English, Mathematics and Science. The content is adapted for the PGCE Specialist Mathematics route. The module involves work both at the IOe and in schools.
  • Specialism: This module complements and enhances the first module, and also carries 30 credits at masters level. We will develop your subject and pedagogic knowledge in areas such as art and design, children's literature, english language and literacy, French, geography, history, mathematics, music, new media, science and Spanish. We will allocate you to a particular area of study based on your prior learning, experience and qualifications. As with the above module, the work will be based both at the IOE and in schools. PGCE Specialist Mathematics route must complete the Specialist Maths module.
  • Professional practice: The main focus of this element of the programme is on school-based learning and practical teaching. It includes teaching at the IOE, observation of teaching, self-study, subject knowledge development, and pedagogical and professional development. It is formally examined using the teachers' Standards and Ofsted grade descriptors for student teachers. This module is adapted for the PGCE Specialist Mathematics route.

Assessment

You and your tutors will review your progress regularly throughout the programme, through assignments, audits, feedback and tutorials. We base your final assessment on a range of evidence, including observations of your teaching, assignments, subject knowledge development, professional conduct and responses to self-study. attendance and punctuality are important requirements and are assessed as aspects of your professional attributes.
