Overview

Our DTLLS programme can be delivered either one year full-time, or two years part-time. Successful achievement will result in you being awarded either the full PGCE for teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (Post Compulsory) or a Certificate in Education. The PGCE diploma is awarded if you are entering the course with at least an Honours degree, the Certification in Education is awarded if you are entering with another form of qualification.

The course synthesises theory with teaching practice and satisfactory achievement of all modules is required.

We welcome applications from both graduates and those who have vocational qualifications and the programme of study is common to all learners with some learners choosing to complete modules at a higher academic level.

If you are offered a place on this course we will have agreed a teaching practice placement for you before we confirm this offer. This can depend on your subject specialism and the availability of a suitable and supportive placement for the duration of your studies.

We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates who wish to teach in the following areas:

  • Hospitality
  • Media (Vocational)
  • Motor Vehicle
  • Construction
  • ICT
  • Early Years

We are currently underrepresented in applications from these areas and have teaching placements waiting to be filled at Blackburn College. If you are interested in teaching in the following areas, and wish to have a guaranteed placement as part of your course that we are able to arrange on your behalf, please get in touch.

What Will I Study?

The programme is delivered through a variety of methods, which encourage those on the course to link theory and practice. Learners are encouraged to become reflective practitioners and you will be required to keep a journal which records your own development.

You will explore educational theories, learn how to plan, deliver, assess and evaluate and consider teaching & learning for a range of groups and individuals.

Your teaching practice is integral to the entire programme and through this you demonstrate how your own understanding of the principles of teaching and learning is developing.

The exciting and diverse Lifelong Learning Sector is explored from many angles and you are encouraged to undertake independent research and study to inform your work

Entry Requirements

A degree (if choosing to undertake PGCE)

OR

A recognised level 3 qualification in a vocational area

A level 2 qualification in literacy and numeracy (or completion of an initial diagnostic test)

A keen interest in teaching and Learning. You will also need a current CRB certificate.

Modules

This a 6 module University award and each module carries 20 credits. Those studying towards a PGCE may choose to take some of the modules at the higher postgraduate level.

  • Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector
  • Developing professional practice in Teaching and Learning
  • Curriculum Design and Development
  • Action Research: Demonstrating Practice
  • Teaching Inclusively and Reflecting on Practice
  • Contemporary Issues in the Lifelong Learning Sector

Please note all modules run parallel to teaching practice and a minimum of 150 hours of teaching practice is undertaken in addition to the taught modules. If you are studying on a part-time basis over two years, you will need teaching practice of over 75 hours each year.

How will I be assessed

Throughout the course you’ll be assessed by Essays, Presentations including Group Presentations, Portfolio Building as well as Self Assessment and Peer Assessment methods. Assessment is designed to showcase the opportunities for assessment within the sector.
