Masters Level Module
This module aims to enable participants to examine, apply and
evaluate theoretical frameworks for the analysis of written and
spoken English and theories of language and literacy learning. We
will explore linguistic features of English which underpin the
teaching of literacy, analysing these in the context of the
historical development of the language and its current use, and
will apply these understandings to literacy learning and teaching.
Participants will be invited to compare and evaluate approaches
derived from different bodies of linguistic and pedagogic theory.
We will examine the impact of new technologies on literacy
practices and the benefits and challenges of ICT based approaches
to learning. An overarching theme of the course will be the teacher
as co-researcher with adult learners. An introduction to current
educational research methods will be provided. Participants will be
asked to apply linguistic theory to the assessment of a learner's
written English and to evaluate a learning theory with reference to
a particular group and context. Face-to-face sessions will be
supplemented by discussions and tasks carried out in a virtual
learning environment. The aim is to create and maintain a
stimulating and supportive learning community. The module is
available as a freestanding course.
