The EdD (International) degree programme also forms part of a dual award being offered by the Institute in partnership with the National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. Each institution has an established record in both internationally recognised research and the delivery of postgraduate programmes to an international clientele.

The EdD Dual Award programme is designed for professionals who would like to extend their professional expertise and training and develop skills in research, evaluation and reflection on practice. It is of value to academic staff in universities and colleges, school teachers and professionals working in international organisations. It is also suitable for senior administrators in schools, universities and educational and government bodies. It has the rigour and expectations of a PhD, but with a professional focus.

The programme enables you to undertake a common programme at two institutions and on successful completion of the programme, you will be awarded a Doctor in Education degree from both institutions. The dual degree brings together two educational institutions on different continents to offer a programme that reflects the respective cultures and perspectives of these institutions. In an increasing global educational environment, by combining the strengths of two institutions in delivering the programme, it provides you with a diversity of educational knowledge and views. The programme will allow the comparison of professional practices within the context of the two different landscapes and thus enhance the creation of new professional knowledge. One of the aims of the EdD is to develop professional leaders who are able to identify and solve complex "field based" problems. Professional doctorates stress the application of research, development of professional knowledge and creation of knowledge within the profession.

On successful completion of the thesis, you will be awarded dual EdDs, one from IOE and one from NIE.

Home and Dual Institution

You can apply to either IOE or NIE. The institution that you apply to will be your designated home institution and the other institution will be referred to as the dual institution. More details on the organisation of the programme can be found on the Dual Award EdD Organisation of Delivery document (pdf, 0.2mb)

Pattern of study

Given the nature of a Dual Award doctoral programme, courses at IOE do not mirror courses at NIE, although there is still parity of educational goals. Therefore, the type and number of required courses for your candidature will vary slightly depending on which institution you choose to begin with as your home institution.

You will take your taught courses and complete an Institution-Focused Study (IFS) at the home institution.

On completion of the coursework you will submit a portfolio consisting of your course assignments. Your continuation to the research study for the IFS is dependent upon your portfolio of satisfactory assignments and your IFS proposal being approved. On completion of the IFS and submission of the thesis proposal, there is a formal review of your progress prior to starting the thesis.

You will be working closely with your assigned supervisor(s) from the dual institution and the co-supervisor from the home institution during this stage of your studies. This will enable you to craft your thesis proposal. Upon completion of the formal review prior to thesis, you can then continue with the thesis stage with the dual institution.

Requirement to visit the Dual Institution during the thesis stage

Applicants who choose IOE as the Home Institution

You will undertake the thesis with NIE. Typically you will work closely with your supervisor on a regular basis, and make arrangements to meet for consultation frequently. NIE may organize doctoral research weeks, and you are strongly encouraged to attend these. The specific dates will be arranged with the participants. This will provide you with the necessary contact and support for the successful completion of the thesis.

On completion of the thesis, there will be an oral examination (a viva voce) held in Singapore, where the examiners will ask you questions, enable you to present your work and discuss the originality and contribution of your study. You will also be asked about the whole degree and how it has contributed to your professional understanding and development.

Applicants who choose NIE as the Home Institution

You will undertake the thesis with IOE. You will work closely with your supervisor and make arrangements to discuss your work with them, either in person, by telephone or electronically, on a regular basis. IOE conducts three research weeks per year (one a term). The exact dates vary from year to year but they are usually the end of February/beginning of March; in the second half of June and in the second half of November. The specific dates are published each year.

On completion of the thesis, there will be an oral examination (a viva voce) held in London, where the examiners will ask you questions, enable you to present your work and discuss the originality and contribution of your study.

Entry requirements

You should have at least four years' full-time experience in a relevant professional area and should normally hold a postgraduate masters degree with good grades from a recognised university. We will expect you to provide details of the grades you obtained in your masters degree and a copy of, or a substantial extract from, your masters dissertation.

Length of programme and teaching and study arrangements

The programme is designed to be completed in four years of part-time study; the maximum period of registration is seven. The entry date with IOE as the home institution is October each year. The programme is taught through a combination of intensive one-week blocks in London with face-to-face tutorial support, and by email and online support when you are in your own country. For those who apply with NIE as the home institution, courses usually begin in January each year. This and other courses for the programme will be conducted over a number of weeks, typically in evenings. The second course, which is also delivered over a number of weeks, is scheduled to begin in June, with the specific dates to be finalised.

Fees

Our tuition fees are subject to revision on a yearly basis. You should check with NIE or the Institute of Education for current fees for the next intake.
