The BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science (Medical Science) is the new name for the old BTEC National Diploma.
It is equivalent to 3 A levels and is an ideal course if you wish to pursue a medically related career such as:
- Biomedical science
- Biochemistry
- Radiography
- Audiography
- Nursing
- Dietetics
- Physiotherapy
The course will also prepare you for work if you do not wish to go to university.

What do I need to get on this course?
You will need 5 GCSEs at grades A to C including Science, Maths and English. Alternatively you may have a BTEC First Diploma in Science (merit or distinction) plus GCSE Maths and English at C or better. You must have good communication skills and an interest in Science. We will give assessments to all those who have non-standard qualifications.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed by completing a portfolio of coursework assignments
Where does it lead?
The BTEC Extended Diploma is an ideal pathway to employment or higher education by providing access to specialist units which broaden the learning experience in preparation for employment and/or higher education.
University degree courses that you could apply for at the end of this course are Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Clinical Science, Life Science, Pharmaceutical Science, or Pathology etc. Alternatively you could work in a laboratory for the following industries: manufacturing, engineering, construction, paper, plastic or food. Also in a hospital laboratory, materials testing laboratory, quality control laboratory, an environmental science laboratory or a laboratory in a school, college or university.
