Biomedical Science - BSc (Hons) - Full time

This degree course is designed to give you a broad understanding of the scientific investigation of human health and disease. It covers the key aspects and principles of biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, physiology and toxicology and their application to the causes and management of disease. You will be well equipped with the skills necessary to plan and perform a research project and be aware of the need for good laboratory practice, health and safety, and legal and ethical considerations.

Biomedical science, although well established as a scientific discipline, is also a rapidly-advancing medical subject, constantly striving towards improving human health and creating a need for highly skilled biomedical scientists. This degree is designed to give you a broad understanding of the scientific investigation of human health and disease. It covers the key aspects and principles of biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, physiology and toxicology and their application to the causes and management of disease. More specific knowledge of disease processes comes from the study of clinical laboratory specialities, such as cellular pathology, clinical biochemistry, clinical immunology, haematology, clinical genetics and medical microbiology. This enables a biomedical scientist to understand the science of the causes, consequences, diagnosis and treatment of disease. You will be equipped with the skills necessary to plan and perform a research project and be aware of the need for good laboratory practice, health and safety, and legal and ethical considerations. Your learning is supported by our research teams who are at the forefront of medical research, which gives you the opportunity to conduct your own independent research project for publication. The course offers you the flexibility to study different areas of biology and tailor the course to your own interests. What's involved The course is studied full-time over four years, though it may also be studied part-time. You will learn by a variety of teaching methods including lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, field trips, and through independent study. There may also be some opportunities to study abroad.
