City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science

If you are already employed as a trainee pharmacy technician, this course prepares you for qualified work in hospital, community or industrial pharmacies. It is taught by experienced retail and hospital staff, pharmacists and technicians as well as College tutors.
Students will enrol for the City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science. This course also provides the underpinning knowledge for the NVQ in Pharmacy Services. The latter course is taken and assessed in the workplace. Both courses run on guidelines issued in 2010 and will only be achievable through part-time studies.

Course participants should be working in a community or a hospital as a student pharmacy technician for at least 18 hours per week. You will be required to obtain proof of this work commitment from your employer.
Course content
Year 1:
- Scientific Principles
- Pharmacy Law, Ethics and practice
- Introduction to action and use of medicines
- Pharmaceutics
- Human Physiology
- Medicines & medicines management.
The units listed above relate to the Level 3 Diploma course but also encompass the knowledge and understanding necessary for the NVQ3 qualification taken at work.
Teaching and assessment
Students will be registered with City and Guilds and their programme will be assessed using externally set tests. Work assessed at College can be used as evidence for the NVQ. The course is delivered via lectures, practical investigations and interactive IT packages.
Entry requirements
4 GCSEs A*-C in two science subjects, maths and English, or BTEC full Level 2 Diploma in Science (merit).
Or equivalent evidence that you are working as a trainee pharmacy technician for at least 18 hours a week with the suitability for study at level 3.
Progression
Foundation Degree in Pharmacy Services.
Dates and times
Part time for two years. One single day (morning, afternoon and evening) per week. Year 1 Wednesdays Year 2 Mondays.
