Law provides an excellent foundation for progression to university or a career in the legal system. It provides skills desired by employers, such as problem solving, critical thinking and analytical ability. What will I be doing on the course? This qualification involves the study of the legal system in England and Wales. You will gain an overview of how the civil and criminal courts work and learn about the part played by both legal and lay personnel. You will see how the law develops and changes over time. The study of Law is suitable for anyone interested in the relationship between people, crime and the way in which the law operates to influence society. The study of Law is also about critical thinking and being able to apply your knowledge to a difficult situation. This is particularly evident in the study of criminal law in A2 where you will examine, in depth, the laws of murder, manslaughter, theft and defences to these crimes such as insanity and intoxication. Enrichment activities are organised to link with the syllabus, including a visit to the Crown Court and Parliament, which will incur a small charge.
Additional NotesFor full time students the course will form part of a larger programme of study which consists of timetabled sessions, enrichment activities, work experience and private study time. To achieve this a student will normally be asked to select from columns of the 6th Form matrix in each year of study. If a student falls below this programme requirement they may be classed as part time by some external agencies and may be required to pay fees for their tuition and/or exams. Please check with the tutor at interview that the subjects you have selected form a full-time programme. Every full time 6th Form student will have a personal tutor and will study a tutorial programme. The tutor will be responsible for the pastoral care of the student and for the tracking and monitoring of their progress on the course. This subject can be selected on its own for part time study for which tuition fees may be payable (please consult Student Services for fee concessions). Part time students may also be required to pay exam fees. You may have the opportunity to go on trips during the year. A small charge will be payable for these visits.

Once she has completed her A Levels she hopes to go to Oxford Brookes University to study Law. “I really like the relaxed environment of the Sixth Form Centre, you are provided with an element of freedom that you don’t get at schools. You are expected to work independently, similar to how you would at university. GC Sixth Form is like the step in between school and uni. I am now looking forward to completing my A Levels and progressing on to university.”
