About This Course

Exam Board: Edexcel Fast Track: No Daytime: Cheltenham Evening: No Exams: AS Unit 1 Coursework 30% Unit 2 Externally Set Assignment 8 hours 20% A2 Unit 3 Coursework 30% Unit 4 Externally Set Assignment 12 hours 20% Additional Information: A fee of £50* is required for materials fee which includes a sketchbook plus an additional charge of £20* for a gallery visit. Payment is required at the start of enrolment for both AS and A2. * subject to change Where will this qualification take me? The course is essential for those students wishing to undertake further studies in art, craft and design related subjects. Many students go on to study on Art Foundation or Art Degree courses. What will I be doing on the course? The AS and A2 coursework allows you to explore your own themes generating practical work, ideas and research from primary and contextual sources. You will experiment with media and techniques in fine art disciplines such as drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture presenting your own personal outcomes. There will be visits to galleries such as Tate Modern and The National Gallery to see artists work and link this to your own studies. A2 students will be required to produce a written Personal Study of 1000-3000 words along with their practical coursework. Both AS and A2 externally set assignments have a set theme and a variety of starting points. There will be several weeks to generate a range of ideas, research your theme, and to gather sketches, photographs, designs, explore media and processes and then create your final piece in the timed examination.

Additional Notes

For full time students the course will form part of a larger programme of study which consists of timetabled sessions, enrichment activities, work experience and private study time. To achieve this a student will normally be asked to select from columns of the 6th Form matrix in each year of study. If a student falls below this programme requirement they may be classed as part time by some external agencies and may be required to pay fees for their tuition and/or exams. Please check with the tutor at interview that the subjects you have selected form a full-time programme. Every full time 6th Form student will have a personal tutor and will study a tutorial programme. The tutor will be responsible for the pastoral care of the student and for the tracking and monitoring of their progress on the course. This subject can be selected on its own for part time study for which tuition fees may be payable (please consult Student Services for fee concessions). Part time students may also be required to pay exam fees. You may have the opportunity to go on trips during the year. A small charge will be payable for these visits.
