Who is the course for?
This course is designed for students at levels 5 & 6 or equivalent. The course is aimed at students who wish to expand their knowledge of Italian history, art, cinema, society and culture while improving their speaking, reading and listening skills by participating in discussions based on selected readings, novels, movies, works of art and contemporary social issues.
What are the objectives of the course?
By the end of the 3-term course you will:
- expand and deepen your knowledge of Italian language, culture and history
- develop a critical outlook and understanding of popular culture in Italian society
- be able to communicate and debate in discussions on a range of issues, including social, political and cultural issues
- develop intercultural competence and be conversant about Italian culture, art and lifestyle
- improve the overall fluency and accuracy of the spoken language
- understand a range of references to main historical events and cultural aspects.
How is the course taught?
A communicative approach is used. All four skills (speaking, reading, listening and writing), are practised, with emphasis on speaking.
All the topics (cultural, historical and social) will be taught through movies, literature and arts movements.
Students engage in interactive language activities, participating in group and pair work according to a syllabus.
Students will also be offered guidance in self-study and be set optional homework tasks.
What course can I do next?
After completing the Culture course, students may be able to join a level 5 course, or the course tutor may be able to suggest other suitable courses.
