Who is the course for?
The course is aimed at a wide range of students with a general interest in Portuguese with one of the following:
- Native or near native level of Spanish
- A-Level in Spanish
- Portuguese Via Spanish Level 2 of the MLC Evening Programme
What are the objectives of the course?
By the end of the 3-term course you will:
- be able to understand authentic passages on familiar issues and communicate on a variety of subjects using accurate pronunciation and intonation and a range of language and structure
- be able to read and summarize a limited number of authentic texts
- be able to write more complex texts on familiar issues
- have developed intercultural competence further and be conversant with a variety of issues in Portuguese-speaking countries
How is the course taught?
- A communicative approach is used. All four skills (speaking, reading, listening and writing) are practiced, with the main emphasis on speaking.
- Students engage in interactive language activities, participating in group and pair work according to a syllabus based on systematic grammatical progression.
- Students will also be offered guidance in self-study and be set optional homework tasks.
What form of Portuguese do you teach?
Contemporary Portuguese comprises several dialects and sub-dialects, often very distinct, and two internationally recognized standards (European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese). This class will teach mainly European Portuguese but will also focus on Brazilian pronunciation and grammar by using materials and audio sources from both countries.
What course can I do next?
After completing all three terms of Portuguese via Spanish Level 3, can either join a conventional Level 4 or 5 class, according to individual ability and confidence and following advice from their tutor.
