Sport and Exercise Science Level 3 Extended Diploma

The aim of this course is for you to achieve the BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science. This is a recognised qualification for entry into many sports-related degree programmes and careers. It includes work experience, Functional Skills tutorials and additional qualifications such as sports injuries, first aid for sport, sports leaders awards and Level 2 fitness instructor (gym) qualifications. There are also residential visits and day trips at an additional cost. This course will prepare you for a wide range of sports-related careers.

Successful completion of year one is essential for progression into year two. The course is made up of 18 units; six core units and twelve specialist units. The six core subjects are: Anatomy, physiology, psychology, research methods, research project and biomechanics. The remaining twelve specialist units are: Exercise, health and lifestyle; fitness testing; training and fitness; sport and exercise massage; sports nutrition; sports injuries; sports coaching; practical, individual and team sports; applied aport and exercise psychology and physiology, and work-based experience in sport.

You will be assessed continuously throughout the programme and given ongoing feedback to support you through the course. Your assessments will be written practical and verbal, and give you every opportunity to achieve the maximum grade available. At the end of the course you will be awarded an overall grade for the two year qualification equivalent to 3 A' Levels. Some of the additional qualifications are assessed through both theory and practical examinations.

You will study these subjects through a mixture of theory and practical lessons. Your lessons will be based across two sites; the excellent leisure facilities at Oxford Brookes Centre for Sport and the College's IT facilities.

From this course you will gain knowledge and understanding about a wide range of topic areas, all of which are related to sport and leisure activities. This course will help you develop your leadership, organisation and communication skills, all of which are essential in the leisure industry.

Applicants for a Level 3 programme will normally have at least 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above (including some subjects related to the proposed area of study) and/or a completed Level 2 award, and the willingness to study for an additional Level 2 qualification in English and/or Maths. BTEC Extended Diplomas are valued by employers and higher education. This qualification will provide you with a very good preparation for going onto degree programmes in Sports Science, Sports Therapy, Physiotherapy, Sports Studies Physical Education and related subjects, and also for employment in the sport, leisure, fitness and coaching industries.
