Get ready for work in the IT and business sectors with this information and communications technology qualification. With its practical and theoretical content the Diploma in ICT offers good preparation for a career as an IT practitioner or technician, or further study.

You cover the following seven units:

• communication in the IT industry (30hrs)
• working in the IT industry (30hrs)
• introduction to computer systems (60hrs)
• setting up an IT network (60hrs)
• introduction to spreadsheets (60hrs)
• customising application programs (60hrs)
• ICT graphics (60hrs)

In addition you develop your functional skills in English and maths. All units are assessed via a portfolio of coursework. Functional skills require you to sit an exam. Students on the course are required to improve on their maths or English at GCSE level so you will be asked to re-sit at least one of those subjects during the College year.

You learn by a mixture of practical activities and individual research and individual and group work. The course team is always looking at introducing you to experts in the taught fields and you will need to attend a work experience placement in the second half of the year.

You gain practical as well as theoretical experience and knowledge of IT-related subjects and a sound grounding for progression to further study.

You need four GCSEs at grade D or above, including English language and maths. You also need to demonstrate the appropriate level of literacy and numeracy in the initial assessment.

If you achieve the distinction on the course you can progress to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in ICT. Previous students of ours have also crossed over to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business - we have a high level of cooperation between our business and ICT departments. You can also progress to working directly in the IT industry in IT helpdesk/support roles
