Combine theoretical study with practical experience as you prepare for a career in childcare. The Diploma in Childcare and Education helps you to gain knowledge through observational studies, practical work with children and a range of classroom-based activities which combine theoretical and practical training.
On this course you cover six mandatory units:
• an introduction to working with children
• the developing child
• safe healthy and nurturing environments for children
• children and play
• communication and professional skills
• the practitioner in the workplace (practical unit)

Assessment is through written assignments and portfolios which are
marked internally and moderated externally. You also complete a
multiple choice test which is marked externally.
Your learning is split between class and work - 50% of the course
consists of practical work in a supervised work placement.
The diploma develops a range of professional skills including time management, teamwork and appropriate communication. It builds your self confidence too.
Applicants for a Level 2 programme will normally have:
- At least 4 GCSEs at Grade D or above and/or a completed Level 1
award
- GCSEs to include English and Maths at Grade D or above or Level 1
Functional Skills qualifications
- The willingness to study for an additional qualification in
English and/or Maths

Applicants will be invited to attend an interview and complete an
internal assessment. All students will have their literacy and
numeracy needs supported within the programme.
Successful completion can lead to further study at Level 3 for example Children’s Care Learning and Development or help you to secure a position in the workplace.
