About This Course:

This is an opportunity to study on a course that provides coverage of software skills required to develop web based products using industry standard software. Computing skills continue to grow, with the demand for expertise in this field providing varied and excellent career opportunities.

The course provides essential industry skills in multimedia web development and scripting for desktop and mobile web products. You will develop a range of projects that explore existing and emerging digital and web server technologies. In a rapidly changing industry these can include xHTML, HTML5, CSS, XML, SQL, server side languages, Adobe AIR (Flash based), and JavaScript frameworks. In addition, you will learn to use a range of software including Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Visual Studio.

The general aims of this programme are to help you to develop knowledge and skills in researching, planning, developing and evaluating multimedia products for the web. The programme will also help you develop an awareness of the creative process, visual language and critical thinking skills.

What You Need:
  • Two Higher and three Intermediate 2 courses (including Computing, Graphic Design or Information Systems) OR
  • Two Higher and three Standard Grades at Credit level or above (including Computing, Graphic Design or Information Systems) OR
  • A national qualification at SCQF Level 5 or 6 in a related subject such as Digital Media Computing, Computer Arts and Animation, OR
  • Other equivalent qualifications or experience

What You Study:

The subjects you will study include:

Year 1

Web Development Fundamentals, Bitmap and Vector, Planning and Authoring, Web Development: Essential Content, SQL: An introduction, Client Side Scripting for Web Applications, User Interface Design, Working within a Project Team, Interactive Media: Graded Unit 1, Researching Multimedia Applications for Practical Re-delivery.

Year 2

Designing and Developing an Interactive Product, Human Computer Interface, Project Management for IT, Interactive Media Composition, Professional and Legal Issues for Web and Multimedia Developers, Building an e-Business, Sound And Vision for Interactivity, Interactive Media :Graded Unit 2, Advanced Bitmap/Vector Techniques.

After The Course:

Career

Interface designer, web designer and developer, content creator, multimedia development specialist or project manager.

Continuing Study

Students who complete their HND may progress to:

  • BSc (Hons) Interactive Media Development GCAL at Glasgow Caledonian University
  • BSc/BSc (Hons) Computing (Web Systems Development) at Glasgow Caledonian University
  • BSc (Hons) Web Development at the University of the West of Scotland.
  • BSc/BSc (Hons) Interactive Media Design at Napier University
  • BSc/BSc (Hons) Digital Media at Napier University
  • BEng (Hons) Web Technologies at Napier University
How Long:

Two years, starting in August. You can also leave after one year with a Higher National Certificate.
