Pre-access to Higher Education provides a foundation in the skills
required to become an independent learner capable of undertaking a
level 3 course and progressing on to university. The course is
designed as part of a package to support students who are returning
to education and taking their GCSE English, Maths and Science. Five

Pre-access to Higher Education provides a foundation in the skills

computing resources What will I Study? Students study Seven
different units with a focus on essay writing and study skills as
well as improving and enhancing IT skills. Managing your own
learning investigates how people learn and equips students with a
range of strategies to suit different learning styles and needs.
The module supports students who are taking Maths, English and
Science GCSE's, identifying targets to helps students achieve at
least a C-grade in these subjects. Developing personal study skills
explores how to work in the modern college environment firstly
looking at how to improve academic writing. Students will recap and
learn the basics of spelling and grammar and later explore how to
structure and write an academic essay. The module develops thinking
skills where students debate topical issues related to their
interests and future study. Investigating a career allows students
to explore a range of career paths and university options with
specialist support from Positive About Futures How will I be
Taught? Students currently have 7 hours of in class taught sessions
per week. Students are also expected to complete additional study
each week. Classroom activities include group work, debates and
computer based sessions, all working towards completing portfolio
based work. Students also have opportunities to learn through
Chionline and in the college library. How will I be Assessed?
Students must complete a range of tasks which make up a portfolio
for each unit. These include group projects, essays and in class
tests which the candidate must present as evidence in the folder.
The work is then assessed by an external examiner at the end of the
course- there are no external exams What our students say? 'Having
