The AS course explores areas of the world which are vulnerable to
tectonic hazards and increasing risks from climate hazards.
Students will investigate the complex physical and human factors
which impact on disasters looking at migration and the rise of the
megacity. Fieldwork and research is used to investigate extreme
weather and rebranding in Cornwall as well as visits in the local
area to investigate local hazards and population issues. Five

deep understanding of the world What will I Study? Paper 1: The
World at Risk: Within this unit you will learn the details of
hazard formation, vulnerability, management and distribution, such
as, hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanoes, bushfires, drought and
tornadoes. Students then explore the causes and consequences of
climate change. Going Global: The second module of paper one
enables students to assess globalisation, why it occurs, the
consequences of globalisation and how it allows people to stay
connected. This then moves on to focus on migration, the issues,
reasons for and against migration Paper 2: Extreme Weather:
Students learn how weather systems develop and how to interpret
synoptic charts. Students investigate extreme weather events in
both MEDC’s and LEDC’s. Rebranding Students investigate rebranding
in Cornwall and Portsmouth looking at the need to regenerate areas
of the UK that have declined and the strategies used to rebrand
places. How will I be Taught? Students currently have 4.5 hours of
in class taught sessions in a week. Additionally students are
expected to undertake a further 4.5 hours of additional reading and
study per week. Classroom activities include group work, debates
and exam focused sessions preparing students to apply their
knowledge in the geography exam. Students also have opportunities
to learn through Chionline and in the college library. How will I
be Assessed? The course is entirely exam based with a range of
short answer questions and short essay based questions: Unit 1- 1hr
30 min 60% of the A/S course Unit 2- 1hr 15 min 40 % of the A/S
course What our students say? ' I enjoy the lessons as they are
really creative. I particularly liked the rebrandopoly lesson and
the Kyoto debate as I enjoy group work' 'The fieldwork trip to
Cornwall was fun as I got to know the rest of the group really well
and do some real geography'
