Media Studies considers the vast range of Media platforms available today. The subject is analytical based where students will learn how to 'read' media texts for possible meanings. Due the academic nature of the subject students will be required to undertake lots of written work, including a long journalistic piece, a 1400 word report and a 2 1/2 hour essay based exam. Media Studies considers the vast range of Media platforms available today. The subject is analytical based where students will learn how to 'read' media texts for possible meanings. So if you don't like writing this is not the ideal subject for you! Five Reasons to Study this Course at Chichester 1. It broadens your awareness of the world around you! 2. Creates awareness to the power of the Media today 3. Offers understanding of others and a variety of viewpoints. 4. Develops communication and written skills 5. Encourages creativity not just in practical work but also of thought What will I Study? The Coursework will be print based using Photoshop The exam has 3 main areas of Study; Text - textual analysis of Media texts from a range of diverse platforms. This will include the study of Visual and technical codes, Narrative and genre and language and mode of address. Representation - where you will consider how different groups of people, events and issues are represented in the Media Audiences - How audiences are targeted and receive, interact and respond to the media. How will I be Taught? Presentations will accompany most lessons and will be available afterwards on the college intranet for revision purposes. There will be some full screenings (although we are not a Film Appreciation Society so don't expect this most lessons). Individual and group creative activities, written assignments/timed questions to improve written communication skills and lots of interactive discussion (crucial to understand the viewpoints of others!). Computer tuition in Photoshop and creative design. How will I be Assessed? Formative assessment will be through a variety of methods, including timed questions (to build stamina for exam performance). Summative assessment will be through a 2 1/2 hour essay based exam and 3 related pieces of coursework. What our students say? Students say they never look at the Media in the same way again!
