Summary:

This course is ideal if you want to take a first step towards a career in the Travel and Tourism industry. It is intended mainly for the 16 - 19 age group who have completed GCSEs and are looking for a course which provides a broad foundation for a career in Travel and Tourism. Like other Level 3 courses it can also lead to entry into higher education. It includes a strong travel bias to meet the ever growing demand from industry for well trained people in jobs such as cabin crew, resort reps and travel agents. In addition to the BTEC Diploma additional qualifications are included in this course to enhance job prospects - and NCFE Resort Representative Qualification.

Course Code: A0162 Start Date: 03/09/2012 End Date: 06/07/2014 Course Length: Two years Course Schedule: 3 or 4 days a week Entry Requirements:

The qualifications you will normally require are four GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English, a BTEC Level 2 Diploma or equivalent Level 2 qualification, including a Maths and English qualification at Level 2.

At interview, you will also need to demonstrate your enthusiasm and commitment to the travel and tourism industry. A good school profile or reference which reflects a positive attitude and very good attendance is also necessary.

Assessment:

Every BTEC Diploma unit is assessed by projects, assignments, presentations and class exercises.

Academic Progression:

You can continue in education by progressing onto a Foundation Degree course, here at City College or elsewhere, or other higher education.

Career Progression:

You can obtain employment within the travel and tourism industry. Recent past students can be found in travel agents within Norfolk and further afield, at Norwich Airport as ground crew and working overseas as resort representatives for major tour operators.

Full Description:

In year 1 you will study various units from the BTEC Diploma such as:

  • Customer Service
  • Business in Travel and Tourism
  • Travel Destinations - UK and Worldwide
  • Investigating Travel & Tourism

In year 2 you will study more units from BTEC diploma, plus NCFE Resort Representative

A variety of travel, tourism and business related subjects will be taught by lecturers with travel and tourism backgrounds.

You will be in class for 3 or 4 days a week and will need additional time for course related research. There are also various clubs and activities we encourage you to enjoy such as student union activities and the sports centre/gym. Out of college some time will need to be put aside for completing assignments and homework.

Costs:

There are compulsory educational study visits which will further help you to understand the needs of travellers. In the second year you will study a subject called Residential Study Visit. For this unit you will investiage various destinations and then make a decision where you want to go on your visit. You will be making all the arrangements including a full itinerary under the guidance of a lecturer. The cost is in the region of £400.
