WJEC L3 Advanced Subsidiary GCE Level in Biology
The AS/A Level Biology follows the WJEC specification and builds
upon topics covered at GCSE. The AS Level areas of study include
cell structure, nutrition, transport in plants and animals,
reproductive strategies and circulation. At A2 study extends to
consider wider applications of Biology such as microbiology,
homeostasis, genetics and gene therapy. These topics are delivered
through two theory modules in each year of the programme.
The AS modules are: BY1 – “Basic Biochemistry and Cell
Organisation”, BY2 – “Biodiversity and Physiology of Body
Systems”.
The A2 modules are BY4 – “Metabolism , Microbiology and
Homeostasis” and BY5- “Environment, Genetics and

In both years the third unit covered is “Practical Assessment”,
BY3(AS), BY6 (A2).
The course is demanding and requires a range of practical and theoretical skills. Commitment and organisation are vital for success.
How you will gain the qualification
AS Level: BY1 and BY2 are both assessed through a 1.5 hour
written structured answer paper and are each worth 40% of the AS
qualification; BY3 is worth 20%.
A2 Level: BY4 and BY5 are both assessed through a 1.75 hour
written paper and are each worth 40% of the A2 qualification; BY6
is worth 20%.
There will be internal mock examinations on published dates to provide realistic examination experience.
What qualifications you need
A minimum of 6 full course GCSE’s grade C or above including a
grade C or above in one of GCSE English or GCSE English Language.
GCSE English Literature is not a substitute.
Students wishing to join AS Level Biology also need grades BB in
GCSE Science and. Additional Science or grade B in GCSE Biology
(all Science qualifications must be gained on Higher Tier papers).
GCSE Maths is also required; preferably at grade B. Applicants with
grade C in these qualifications should discuss alternative Level 3
Science provision.
It is strongly recommended that AS Biology is studied alongside
AS Level Chemistry and should be combined with other Science or
related subjects - e.g. PE.
For progression from AS to A2 a minimum grade E is required overall in the AS qualification, with a grade E attained on each theory paper
Where to next
A Level Biology is accepted as a recognized academic qualification for entrance to all Higher Education institutions and particularly supports theory covered in degree courses in Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Biomedical Sciences, Pscychology and Sports Science. It is a valuable qualification for entrance to healthcare professions such as Physiotherapy, Opthalmology, Pharmacology and Midwifery.
