POLITICS
The A/S course is designed to give you an insight into the
political picture within the UK. It will also give you, as an
individual, the opportunity to form political ideas that you can
support with knowledge in the following ways.
You will:
- Develop a critical awareness of the nature of Government and
Politics and the relationship between political ideas,
institutions, such as the Government, and processes.
- Acquire knowledge and understanding of the structures of
authority and power within the devolved political systems of the
UK, such as the Welsh Assembly, and how these may differ from other
systems.

- Broaden your understanding of rights and responsibilities as
an individual and citizen of the UK.
- Explore the theories of ideology and traditions that determine
the nature of society and shape UK institutions. You will assess
whether existing arrangements within the UK ensure full
participation and democracy.
- Develop critical thinking and examine politics with a broader
perspective.
How you will gain the qualification
Assessment consists of 2 written exams – each lasting 80 minutes.
What qualifications you need
A minimum of 6 full course GCSEs grade C or above, one of which
must be English Language is required.
Entry to A2 is conditional on achieving grade A-E at AS level.
Where to next
From A/S, the next stage of progression will be to A2 Government
and Politics. This year of study will focus on the Political system
of the United States of America.
Studying Politics is useful for other related subjects, such as
Law, Sociology, History and English at A-level, and for studying
Social Science-based subjects at Degree Level. Career opportunities
also exist in that the course will develop your skills of analysis,
evaluation, and research.
Typical careers include journalism, law, management and many others.
