Part Time

The course follows the AQA GCSE Science specification A and covers modules in Biology, Chemistry and Physics:-




Biology, B1, includes a study of diet and exercise, defence against disease, the nervous system, variety of life, adaptation and competition, monitoring the environment, energy flow and nutrient transfer, inheritance, variation and reproduction.




Chemistry,C1, covers Elements and the Periodic Table, compounds, metals and non-metals, reactions of acids, the production and use of fuels and plastics, the changing Earth.

Physics,P1, covers generation and transmission of electricity, energy supply and the home energy transfer. The characteristics of waves, ionising radiation the solar system and its place in an evolving universe are also included.


Practical work forms an essential component of the course and occupies a central part of the delivery programme.



How you will gain the qualification

There are four assessment components each worth 25% of the qualification:-




Three 1 hour externally assessed written papers are sat which incorporate closed and structured questions on topics from the three theory modules.




Two Controlled Assessment Investigative Skills assignments are set in class time, internally marked and externally moderated.


What qualifications you need

A grade D in GCSE Science is required. Mature students will be considered on an individual basis.


Where to next

A GCSE qualification in Science is a well recognised core qualification required for entry to some degree courses such as Nursing and Teaching. It is essential that you check this is accepted as a standalone Science qualification for a degree course and the grade requirement for each institution. It provides a foundation for progression to further study or for employment.
