Description
Full TimeThe course is made up of eight mandatory units and a number of
optional specialist units. The specialist units provide a closer
focus on a vocational area supporting progression to Level
3.
This qualification is from Edexcel’s Next Generation suite of
BTEC First qualifications and is equivalent to 3 GCSEs.
Mandatory units: Principles of Science, Chemistry and our Earth,
Energy and our Universe, Biology and our Environment, Applications
of Chemical Substances,
Applications of Physical Science, Health Applications of Life
Science, Scientific Skills.
Optional specialist units include: Science in Medicine, Chemical
Analysis and Detection and a Practical scientific Project

Additionalities
Students will be required to study GCSE Mathematics and English alongside this programme if they have not previously gained a grade C in these qualifications and will also follow the Welsh Baccalaureate (level 2) programme.
How you will gain the qualification
Two of the mandatory units, “Principles of Science” and
“Scientific Skills” are assessed through an external exam. All
other mandatory units and the specialist optional units are
internally assessed and graded through your portfolio of work and
an overall grade for the qualification is awarded at Pass
(equivalent to
GCSE grade C), Merit (B), Distinction (A) and Distinction* level ( A*).
What qualifications you need
You will normally need to have at least one of the
following:
A BTEC Entry level Certificate in a related subject
A standard of literacy, numeracy and Science supported by a
general
education equivalent to 4 GCSE's at grade D. Related work
experience would
be advantageous for mature applicants
Where to next
A BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate prepares you for employment
and provides a good grounding to go on to higher level courses such
as a BTEC Level 3 Extended
Diploma in Applied Science. With further training or study,
students can go
into careers such as: Forensic Science, Food Technology,
Nursing, Quality
Control, Environmental Science.
